The Beaver Valley Pointer and Setter club held its annual fall gathering the weekend of September 3, 4, 5 at its home grounds in Rochester Twp. Pennsylvania. These grounds have been the site of quality field trials since its inception in the 1940s and this weekend was no exception. There have been strong debates for years on what constitutes a quality field trial dog; this reporter defers to William F. Brown, long time editor of the American Field, who noted in his iconic book "Field Trials: History, Management, and Judging Standards" (published n 1947) that the ideal field trial dog should "possess ambition and courage, stamina, speed, intelligence, style, dash, olfactory powers of a high order, prepotent bloodlines, and conformation such as will enable him to run fast with the least possible exertion." Certainly, there have been many dogs running at the Beaver Valley grounds who would meet this standard, and this weekend was no exception. In fact, one of the most enjoyable aspects of participating in the field trial community is to see a dog exhibit those traits as it covers the terrain at Beaver Valley, or any grounds where we are fortunate to showcase our sport.
This sport would be impossible to enjoy if not for the generosity of the grounds owners and the many volunteers who work diligently to ensure the success of the event. Special thanks to the Board of Directors of the Beaver Valley Pointer and Setter Club, and especially to club members Norm Meeder and Joe Camissa, who were instrumental in ensuring a successful weekend. Also helping out with kitchen duties and bird planting duties were Kathyleen and Bob Smith, Justin Mason, and Tyler Bowser.

Horseback stakes were run on Friday. The weather was unstable, with severe thunderstorms rolling through the area, and warm and humid conditions. Al Fazenbaker and Nick Mellon were in the judicial saddles for the derby stake. Bowser's Backcountry Girl took the blue, handled by her owner Tyler Bowser. "Jean" put on a show with some wide casts and a find on a single, showing steady manners on her bird. Backcountry Gater garnered the second place spot, handled by the veteran Chris Catanzarite. Gator showed potential with a stylish way of going, staying to the front, and digging up four contacts, all handled with very nice derby manners. Rounding out the placements was G's Bacwoods Pocket Rocket, handled by Mark Hughes.
The horseback Shooing Dog had a nice entry of 14; Fazenbaker and Mellon continued their judicial duties for this stake. Marks Hughes handled all three placements in this stake; taking first was Miller's Hopped Up Version (Cricket), who put on a show for the gallery... strong, powerful, forward, and showing exceptional class on her bird. Close behind was Backwoods Dine N Dash, who covered the reaches of Beaver Valley, digging up two finds handled with style. Miller's Special Upgrade (Penny) finished up the placements with two finds and a back to take the yellow ribbon.

The Qualifier stakes were judged by Norm Meeder and Rick Johnson. In the derby stake, Conneaut Creek Colleen scored a single with good derby manners to take the placement, handled by this reporter. The Shooting Dog Qualifier winner was Ajax Irish Charm (Lucky), handled by her owner Rich Jarosinski. Lucky showed a nice forward pattern and handled his birds with style to take the win.

The Open stakes began Saturday, with the Open Puppy being judged by Mark Hughes and Eric Munden. Castle Rock Birch took the top placement with a nice forward race. The second place went to Millie, handled by Eric Davis.

The Open Derby, judged by Victor Jojciak and Allen Fazenbaker, awarded the top placement to Hitail Perfect Storm, handled by Russ Fazio. Stormie lived up to her namesake, pounding the venue with a hard driving forward pace and scoring three nicely handled finds. Second place went to Mohawk Mill Easy, who showed a strong forward pace with a flowing nature that was very eye catching. He was handled by Mark Hughes. Third place went to G's Backwoods Pocket Rocket, handled by Mark Hughes. "Ellie" dug up a single, handled with nice derby manners.

Backcountry Buddy took the top spot in the Open Shooting Dog, with Alex Meeder and Nick Mellon judging this 15-dog stake. Buddy scored two finds and a back, and showed a very strong and forward finish to earn his spot for handler Mark Hughes. Conneaut Creek Scenic River garnered the number two spot with two finds and very classy run, finishing strong for his handler, this reporter. CC Irresistible Rufus finished out the placements for this reporter with two finds and a strong forward finish.

In the Amateur Puppy stake, judged by Mark Hughes and Eric Munden, Millie grabbed first place with a nice forward run, handled by Eric Davis. The remaining placement was scored by Round Hills Leap of Faith, handled by Danny Lease.

Mark and Eric continued their judging assignment with the Open Derby. Taking the blue was Hitail Perfect Storm, handled by Russ Fazio. The remaining placement was secured by Meadowing Quick Silver.

Chris Catanzarite and Rick Johnson handled the judicial duties for the Amateur Shooting Dog stake. Justin Mason handled his fine pointer Backwoods Din N Dash to a first place, Kevin Klein's Texas Sun Rize took the number two spot, and Double Deuce Miles finished up the placements for his handler Doug McMillan.

A huge thank you is in order to the judges noted above for their time in the saddle. This trial was fortunate in having a group of individuals with many combined years of competing, training, and judging bird dogs, and the verdicts were well received. Also, a big thank you to our sponsor Purina, and to U.S. Complete Shooting Dog Association for all of your efforts in supporting our sport.

William F. Brown said it best... "only those who have been present at a trial know of the enjoyment to be derived from attendance, the renewal of health obtained, the pleasant hours spent afield with the jolliest and most whole souled lot of men ever contacted, and the many spectacular thrills vouchsafed when following high-class and greatly prized Setters and Pointers." Hope you feel the same. See you at our spring renewal.
