The AFTCA Region 3 Walking Shooting Dog Championship was hosted by the Lancaster County Field Trial Association at the historic Sabine Hall Plantation near Warsaw, Virginia on March 21.
Sabine Hall was built in 1738 and is still occupied by descendants of the original owner, Colonel Landon Cater. The property is several thousands of acres along the Rappahannock River. It consists of expansive field of row crops, many of which have wide buffers of native grasses and shrubbery. It also has cutovers, hardwood, cow pasture, and shoreline. In the 1980's, "fun trials" were often held at Sabine that included a bird field and a short back course. For our championship however, we had a one-hour walking course that flowed nicely and worked well for showing a strong walking shooting dog. This was the first trial to be held at Sabine since the days of the "fun trials", and we were grateful to be able to return.

The championship was postponed from its original February date due to snowstorms that affected the area. The rescheduling caused entries to total less than was desired. Still, great weather, dog performances, and people made for a nice day. Jameson and Jimmy Crandall chaired the event, Steve Graham put birds out for every brace, and other friends and local field trailers jumped in to help wherever needed, as they always do.

Judges for the event were Kathy Shorter of Gloucester, Virginia, and Grace Anne Lawson of Powhatan, Virginia. Both judges have countless hours in the saddle watching dogs, vast experience judging, and tons of their own success winning with their dogs. We were very grateful that they agreed to judge.

Mohawk Mill Big Stuff, the successful male pointer handled by Ashby Morgan was named Champion. Big was found on point in birdy objectives five times throughout his hour run. His finds were well spaced. Big had a strong ground pattern, a far-reaching finish, and was always attentive to his handler. He is a large, handsome, liver and white dog who was bred by Gary and Ellen Winall.

The runner-up was Chippokes Cracker Jack. Like Big, Jack has also had a very successful field trial career with countless wins and placements over the years. The compact, tri-colored male setter is owned and handled by Lee Flanders. Jack scored five bird finds with polished manners. His hour displayed an athletic ground race and a strong finish.
