Inaugural Virginia Walking Classic
To bring more opportunities for competition to the region, the four Virginia-based U. S. Complete field trial clubs--Hanover Field Trial Association, Lancaster Field Trial Association, Peninsula Bird Hunters, and Powhatan Field Trial Club--joined together to create and host the inaugural Virginia Walking Classic in January 2026.

The stakes were held at the immaculate Cutawhiskie Farm field trial grounds near Ahoskie, North Carolina. These grounds were the vision of Dr. Aubrey Morgan, whose legacy continues to provide one of the finest field trial venues available. Many thanks go to Barbel Fetkoter and the hardworking team who help manage the property for field trials.

Ashby Morgan secured the venue, birds, and judges. Daily meals over the three days of running were prepared by Lee Flanders, Ashby Morgan, Kirk Regensburg, Ellen Winall, and Jimmy and Jameson Crandall. Dennis Kivikko and Kirk Regensburg handled the administrative duties. Thanks to everyone who helped launch what is hoped to become a new tradition. For those who planted birds, drove dog wagons, brought supplies, and more, we are grateful.

Competitors represented Tennessee, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Carolinas. Many handlers from out of town were wintering in the nearby Sandhills region of North Carolina and made the drive over for the weekend. Stakes included a 45-minute Amateur Shooting Dog Classic, Amateur Gun Dog, Amateur Derby, and Amateur Puppy.

Tony Bingham and Cliff Monroe traveled from western North Carolina to judge the Amateur Shooting Dog Classic. The stake drew 23 entries and was won by Mohawk Mill Big Stuff. "Big" is a striking liver-and-white pointer male who is no stranger to the winners' circle. Successfully campaigned by Ashby Morgan and owned by Gary and Ellen Winall, Big turned in an outstanding performance. During his 45-minute effort, he recorded five bird finds, each handled with perfect manners. On every occasion, he was found well to the front, either along the course or by the scout.

Second place was awarded to Mohawk Mill Charmer, a setter female owned and handled by Ashby Morgan. Third place went to Sweet Grass Skeeter, a setter male owned and handled by David Huffine. Charmer and Skeeter were braced together and completed the 45-minute course in strong fashion after both dogs pointed and backed one another on several pieces of beautiful bird work.

The Amateur Gun Dog stake was added to the program in an effort to attract local bird hunters and novice field trial participants. Thanks to Dennis Kivikko and Stephen McKalko for serving as judges. The stake was won by Red Granite's Duke of York. "Duke," a Brittany male owned by Bill and Susan Gwynn, was the reigning Amateur Gun Dog of the Year and demonstrated why with another impressive performance. Second place went to "Tanzi," a speedy French Brittany owned and handled by John Hutwagner. Third was awarded to Deb's McKeachie Road, a setter female owned and handled by Deb Kennedy of New Hampshire.

The Amateur Derby was won by Bob's Elhew Coco, a pointer female owned and handled by Bobby Phillips. Second place went to Chippokes Hank, a pointer male owned and handled by Lee Flanders. Third place was awarded to Haywood's Borys Eclipse, a Brittany male owned and handled by Steve McKalko. All three placements demonstrated the qualities sought in a young derby prospect, showing impressive bird-finding ability, biddability, and drive while covering the course with enthusiasm and style.

The Amateur Puppy stake was won by Lancaster's Spot On, a pointer male owned and handled by Jimmy Crandall. Second place went to Longmeadow Buster, a setter male owned and handled by Ben Dillard. Third place was Sunrise Shooting Star, a setter female owned and handled by Jennifer Johnson. The Puppy stake provided an exciting glimpse into the future, with all three placements displaying the independence, application, and potential that could carry them on to successful derby and shooting dog careers. The quality of the young dogs competing was an encouraging sign for the future of walking field trials in the region.
