Verle Farrow Amateur Puppy Classic (front row): Jeff Smith with Treetop Helen, Lyn Smith, Gene Hogge with Ellie's Domino, and Bruce Conover with Forever in Blue Jeans. (Back row): Ellen Winall, Gary Winall, Barbel Fetkoter, Ashby Morgan, Jim Jones, Grace Anne Lawson, and Larry King.
What was originally scheduled for November 2025 turned into an April 2026 trial. Scheduling conflicts and seriously bad weather forced two postponements before we would squeeze our trial in at the end of the season.
Many thanks go out to those who made it possible. Thank you to Purina and Greg Blair for the continued support of this trial. Ellen Winall handled the paperwork, including the drawing, the ad, Facebook updates, programs, judges' gifts, and even a little judging when she wasn't scouting. Gary and Ellen Winall secured Purina sponsorship and trophies. Rob Maguire and Grace Anne Lawson judged the one-hour All-Age, Rob and Lee Flanders judged the 30-minute Puppy, Jeff Smith and Bruce Conover judged the 30-minute Derby, and Ellen Winall and Larry King took care of the half-hour All-Age stake. Barbel Fetkoter, J. Parke Brinkley, Gary Winall, and Ellen Winall made sure everyone was well fed with breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. Mornings began early with coffee, juice, eggs, salted ham, bacon, sausage gravy, biscuits, and milk. Lunches were expertly prepared by Barbel and dinners by Barbel Fetkoter, Jim Jones, and Ellen Winall, with lasagna the night before the trial and BBQ with all the fixings, cakes, and banana pudding. Barbel also raised the quail from day-old chicks for the trials held at Ahoskie. Jimmy Jones, J. Parke Brinkley, and J. R. Hastings helped with the dog wagon duties. Ashby Morgan not only ran dogs, but kept the course well stocked with quail. It was good to see Gary Ansell accompanied by his grandson, Andrew, who rode both days of the trial. We had Andrew scouting instead of gallery riding one time, but if you don't get them out there, they will not learn.
The trial was held at the Virginia Amateur Club's Cutawhiskie trial grounds near St. John, North Carolina. The weather was decent, but on the warm side with highs in the 70s both days.
The Verle Farrow Puppy stake was a good one with Jeff Smith's pointer female, Treetop Helen, showing the judges what they were looking for with a hard-driving race. Second was Ellie's Domino, a pointer male owned and handled by Gene Hogge with a good, forward effort. Third went to Bruce Conover's pointer female, Forever in Blue Jeans, who was braced with the winner and gave a good account of herself as well. Nothing like getting those puppies out and getting them experience.
Larry King's pointer female, Southbound Priscilla, had a very good performance on the ground, highlighted by two finished finds to win the Parke Brinkley Derby stake. Mohawk Mill Captain, a very athletic and classy pointer male handled by Gary Winall, had one find and a classy race to take second. Mohawk Mill Country Girl, just coming off of whelping pups in January, handled by Gary Winall, rounded out the placements with an attractive way of going and one bird contact.
The one-hour All-Age Classic proved tough for many participants. However, Mohawk Mill Hawkeye prevailed with a big going, classy race and two well-executed finds. Just behind him was his kennelmate Mohawk Mill Jet Stream with two finds, classy running, pointing, and a race to be very proud of.
Moving on to the 30-minute All-Age stake, Ashby Morgan handled the first and second-place dogs. First went to Mohawk Mill Charmer, a big, classy female setter that took to the course with purpose and had two beautiful finds and a strong, showy finish. Close behind was Mohawk Mill Big Stuff, a big gliding pointer male, that had two finds and one unproductive for second place. Pagan Creek Atticus, a pointer male handled by Gene Hogge, also had two finds to round out the placements.
