Amateur Shooting Dog: Calico's Country Strong with Brayden Smith, Nomads Uncle Sam with Chole Lewis, and Southbound Hotdog Homer with Alex Smith, joined by participants.

Our Spring trial is always a special event, and this year was no different. We met with adversity as both our regular bird planter extraordinaire, Darryl Miller, and our dog wagon driver extraordinaire, Mike Winchester, had to beg off. Mike was sick, and Darryl was attending a funeral. Believe me, we gained a new appreciation for their talents! We utilized Til Hankley and me at the bird planting, and Doug Mays and Kirk Regensburg at the dog wagon. A deep and hearty thank you to everyone who filled in.

Julie Richards performed her kitchen magic as usual and prepared suppers and lunches far above normal field trial fare. Our Saturday night supper was sponsored, as our ad advertised, by our stalwart Calico Kennels crew. We can always count on them to fulfill their promises and commitments, a rarity nowadays. They are true friends to this trial. Tiffany, Alex, Frank, Brayden, and April, it is a pleasure to have you and your dogs in our trial always. We thank you.

Where would we ever be without Donna McGuire? Answer, far less complete in quality, that's for sure! If there is a job that needs doing, she will have it done in an instant, and it will be done better than you would have. Before, during, and after our trials, she is always busy and always with a smile. Lordy, Donna, you are a jewel.

Our judges are highly experienced and top-notch. Kirk Regensburg stopped by to have me as a partner in the All-Age. Til Hankley and Steve Mills handled the Derby, and you know that was done right. Al Dahl and Steve Mills ran the Shooting Dog show in fine fashion. There is absolutely no better field trial judge in America than Steve Mills, and you can take that to the bank, NONE. If your dog is judged by Steve, you have been analyzed by the absolute best. And we got him in our Club; how lucky can we be?

John and Vivian Milton are our wonderful hosts. Nobody knows more about the mechanics of a first-rate trial than these two, so every year we strive to do our best to live up to their standards. We try hard. They are quality folks. We thank them with all our hearts.
Purina is our trial sponsor. We thank them and Greg Blair. They are a professional team and are matched by no other.

This trial started with the Amateur All-Age on Friday morning. Birds were extremely hard to come by. Running in the second brace, however, Al Dahl's Buffalo Junction Klaus showed us it could be done. We had several dogs in this stake with ample and spirited race, but only one who coupled race with bird work. He successfully found Mr. Bob and pointed well off from him along the Lone Oak Farm fence line. He won it in nice fashion.
With 100% chance of rain forecast, we had a hasty lunch and went back to the fray. Our winner came from the first brace with Sadie Ridge Rip for Grayson Francis. This well-made, handsome male ran the course about as well as any derby has ever run it. He finished going into the airport field (most derbies finish considerably before this). His bird work was finished and pretty.
Second was the youthful Buffalo Jct Fly. She was fast and light on her feet. She coupled her fleetness with a good nose and bird contacts. She indeed showed potential.
Just as we finished, a few raindrops were beginning to fall. These were soon replaced by a lot of raindrops falling very close together. We adjourned to Miss Julie's chicken et al supper, which, although advertised differently, was put on by the Greenfields Field Trial Club.
It rained most of the night, and the temperature dropped. Saturday was cold, but the dogs found birds, and that made it worthwhile. Our winner came in the fourth brace with Calico's Country Strong putting on a clinic. In reality, nobody came close to her performance. Alex and Tiffany were pretty much just along for the ride and to flush. Her four finds were crisp, clean, and beautiful. Her race was animated and flawless. Her win, going away.
Nomads Uncle Sam was second, and Southbound Hotdog Homer was third. Sam was stronger on the ground. Both had two finds and one unproductive.

A goodly number of folks joined us for supper provided by Calico Kennels (Alex, Tiffany, and Brayden Smith, plus Frank and April Henderson). This terrific meal was cooked and served by Julie Richards. Thank you, Calico. It's nice to have friends you can count on.

We appreciate Pat and Marilyn Lockhart for being loyal supporters, and we thank you for being you. Lastly, it's nice to have Larry King back. What a terrific guy and loyal supporter of all field trials.

What else can I say? It was fun. Please, y'all come back.
