On March 14, 2026, the Central Prairie Field Trial Club held an amateur field trial at Hamilton County Fish and Wildlife Area. Many refer to the area as Dolan Lake.
Our club would like to thank the crew at Dolan for their support of our trials. We left this facility many years ago because the course was so overgrown that it was impossible to hold a trial there. The crew at Dolan has done an unbelievable job clearing and burning so we can host trials at this facility.
My wife, Jae, prepared Sloppy Joes for lunch and homemade cookies. This was a great lunch. We want to thank our judges, Scott Kermicle and Jim Ashby, for working so hard watching each dog in every brace, and your scribe, Dan Crunk. Good grounds, good judges, good lunches, and good weather make for a really good trial.

Butch Spelbring Amateur Shooting Dog
Sixteen dogs were drawn for this stake, set in honor of our longtime friend and fellow competitor, Butch Spelbring. In the fall, scenting conditions were really bad, but this day they were very good. The judges had eight or nine dogs clean, giving them several to consider. In the 7th brace, Jack Glover brought "Flint," a male setter, to the line, and Don Heisner brought "Abby," his young female setter, to the start line. Flint finished the brace with four finds and one back to earn first place. Heisner's Abby had three finds and two backs to earn her second. Judges and spectators felt this was the best brace of the day. Third place went to "Shooter," Ken DeLong's male Brittany, with two finds and a big race.

Amateur Derby
The second brace of the Derby stake had the first and second-place dogs. The first-place dog was "Jack," a pointer male owned by Dan Crunk. Jack had a broke find and a big forward race. Second place was awarded to "Preacher," a pointer male owned by Brian Stockrahm. Preacher also had one broke find and a strong forward race. Third in this strong derby stake went to Declan Wheat with "Scout," a pointer male. Scout had one find and a strong race.

Amateur Gun Dog
John Landolina won the gun dog competition with "Diamond," his German shorthair female. Diamond had three finds and a strong hunting race. The second-place dog, coming to us from Wisconsin, was "Hank," a pointer male owned by Jack McCarty. Third place went to "Maddie," a pointer female for Brian Stockrahm.

Amateur Puppy
Six entries were drawn in the Puppy stake. "Joker," a pointer male for Brian Stockrahm, was the first-place puppy. Chris Grandolfo's setter male, "Charlie," was second with two bird contacts.
What a wonderful day! Your scribe got to be at a field trial with good friends and bird dogs. Does it get any better?

On Sunday, March 15, 2026, the Central Prairie Field Trial Club held its second amateur field trial of the weekend. FTCI and the NBHA now recognize and count points from multiple trials from the same club. Taking this into account, the club has elected to host two amateur trials on the same weekend. This also allows amateur handlers and owners to come to a location for two opportunities to earn points.
The weather for the day was very good. The impending threat of a serious storm sent some handlers home early. The group from Wisconsin stayed to the end, and I am sure they hit bad weather before they left Illinois on their way home. Lunch again today was prepared by your scribe's wife, Jae Crunk. We ate quickly and returned to running dogs.
Judges for the day were Brad Hire, Scott Kermicle, Rick Stanford, and Dan Crunk. The judges remarked that they were able to judge many really nice dogs.

Butch Spelbring Memorial Amateur Shooting Dog
Fourteen dogs were drawn for this stake. Again, on Sunday, this stake had several dogs that were clean for their 30-minute brace. First place in the Shooting Dog stake went to "Diamond," a female German Shorthair owned by John Landolina. Diamond finished the brace with five finds, a forward searching race. Second place went to "Trigg," a pointer male for Stevan Fuess. Trigg had two finds and one back. This scribe is very happy for Stevan and Trigg, as he finished Trigg both days. Third place went to Ken Delong's pointer male, "Justice." Justice had two nice finds for this brace.

Amateur Derby
On Sunday, the top two dogs switched places, with "Preacher" for Brian Stockrahm taking first place. Preacher had one find and a strong race to the front, and always hunting areas that should hold birds. Second went to "Jack," a pointer male for Dan Crunk. Jack had an extended absence but was found on point; absent at time, but was found on point. Third place went to Rebecca Garcia with her pointer female, "Emma." This was the first time Rebecca had trialed with us, and she brought a very nice pointer female that finished with one find and a very nice race.

Amateur Gun Dog
"Maddie," a pointer female for Brian Stockrahm, finished first with one find and a forward race, always hunting for game. Second place went to "Buddha," a setter male for Jack McCarty. Buddha hunted hard for his 30 minutes with an extended absence.

Amateur Puppy
Only had one puppy finish, and that was "Joker," a pointer male for Brian Stockrahm. Joker had a big forward race, always to the front.
Brian Stockrahm had a very big day. His dogs won the Derby, the Gun Dog, and the Puppy. Also, Brian approached the Central Prairie members and asked to be part of this club. That request met with an enthusiastic heck yes. The impending weather kind of changed the trial slightly, but all in all, we had a really good day with good dogs and really good people. We need to thank our judges and Jae Crunk for preparing lunch. See everyone in the fall.
