NGSPA Region 5 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship (front row): Sherri Tangsrud with Stoney Hill's Pinnacle Dee and Katelyn Macke with Two Ponds Blanco Roux. (Back row): Mike Jackson (judge), Kirk Loftin, Lee Long (judge), and Peter Coppens.
The 2025 NGSPA Region 5 Championships began March 15 at Pyramid State Park near Pinckneyville, Illinois. We would like to thank Purina for their continued support of this trial. Shoutout to Greg Blair, Terry Trzcinski, Karl Gunzer, and Scott Johnson. Jim Moorehouse is our generous supplier of SportDOG collars for our amateur champions. A trial doesn't happen without volunteers to drive the dog wagon, plant birds, make trips into town, provide food, etc. It was refreshing how well everyone worked together this week. Thank you to everyone who donated for meals--Dan and April, Abe and Katelyn, and Jack Marchese. THANK YOU TO OUR JUDGES. Thank you to Dan DiMambro for his help in securing judges and bird planting. We'd like to thank Diane Coppens for her secretary, treasurer, drawing, lunches, suppers, and dog wagon duties, and staying on us to get our write-ups turned in. Without her dedication to these championships, we would not have the organization and ease of running them. Thank you to the President of Region 5, Peter Coppens. If it weren't for his love and dedication to this sport, there would not be a Region 5 Championship. Finally, thank you to Brad, the site superintendent, Henry, Mike, and Jason for all you do to make sure our trial runs successfully. The scribe was Peter Coppens, with the help of the judges.
NGSPA Region 5 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship
The Amateur was judged by Mike Jackson and Lee Long. We thank both of you for your time and expertise. We had 14 dogs and would like to thank all the amateurs who support us: Abe Macke, Kirk Loftin, Jack Marchese, JJJ, Mike Patrick, Fred Ryan, and Hank Lewis. It was a very windy day, but many of the dogs still found the birds. We hustled and finished the stake before the storm rolled in. A great supper was held, and everyone celebrated in the clubhouse.
The champion was Stoney Hill's Pinnacle Dee ("Dee"), who is owned and handled by Kirk Loftin. Abe Macke scouted for Dee. She was in the fourth brace. Dee had multiple clean finds (with one NP) throughout the hour. She had a huge race with nice moves. Dee handled kindly for her owner.
The runner-up was Two Ponds Blanco Roux ("Roux"). Roux is owned by Jason Brooks and handled by Hank Lewis. Roux came from the seventh brace. She started off a little slow with a rabbit find at 6 and an NP at 8. At 27, she had a stop-to-flush, a back at 33, a find at 39, and a covey find at 41. Roux handled nicely and was stylish with good manners.
NGSPA Region 5 Open All-Age Championship
The All-Age followed the Amateur. We did take Monday off because of the wind and cold. The All-Age stake was capably judged by Lee Long and Tim Zick. Big thank you to you both for filling these judging spots. Five braces were drawn.
High Standing Cuttin Edge ("Woody") was named the champion. Woody is owned by Anthony and Dayna Rusciano and handled by Dan DiMambro. April was the most capable scout. Woody ran in the fourth brace. He impressed the judges with his mature, powerful moves. Woody had big, all-age moves and all manners in order. He had a find at 4 and two NPs. He worked in conjunction with his handler and had a strong finish. With all these elements put together, Woody was named our All-Age Champion this year.
Runner-up went to Twin Creeks Running Rocky ("Rocky"). Rocky is owned and handled by Kirk Loftin. Rocky was also a great contender in this stake. He came from the fourth brace. He was strong and had a big all-age run. Rocky had a find at 5 and two NPs. Rocky listened well to his handler and was stylish on his bird work. This performance earned him the runner-up All-Age title.
NGSPA Region 5 Open Shooting Dog Championship
The last stake run was the Shooting Dog. It was capably judged by Lee Long and Tim Zick. A big shoutout for your time in the saddle and dedication to this sport. We appreciate your dedication to this trial. The judges were presented with six braces of quality dogs to watch. Thank you to the handlers.
The judges announced Stoney Hill's Pinnacle Dee, owned and handled by Kirk Loftin, as the champion. Dee was from Brace 3 and had finds at 17 and 31. Dee had a strong/smooth run, and the judges commented that she was a pleasure to watch.
Runner-up went to Uodibar's Lover Boy ("Blue"), owned by Sherri Tangsrud and handled by Kirk Loftin. Blue was from the second brace and had finds at 18, 45, and 54. He had a back at 9, an NP at 33, and a covey find at time. Blue had a strong forward race, constantly hugging with good application. Good style on point.
Congratulations to our winners. Thank you to everyone in attendance; without your support, Region 5 wouldn't happen. We look forward to seeing all participants at the 2027 Region 5 Championship in March 2027 at Pyramid State Park.
