Illinois Amateur Shooting Dog Classic: Jack Alexander (judge), Rolling Hills Ty with Mark Johnson, Jeff Wagoner, Adam DeLude, Alliwood's Shady Street with Bob Bakas (scout), and Dave Capstick (judge).
The Max Eldred Open Derby started Friday morning, March 6. We want to thank our judges, Dave Capstick and Jack Alexander, for their time in the saddle. They judged both stakes and gave us their full attention.
We drew six derbies, and each brace had bird work. Even with a small entry, the quality was still there. First went to pointer female, Allie, owned and handled by Jeff Hainline. Second went to pointer male Gunsmoke, owned and handled by Sean Pat Derrig. Third went to pointer female Lola, owned and handled by Mike Duvall.
The weather was challenging at times. We had super warm temperatures with scattered thunderstorms on Friday. Saturday was a bit better, but foggy in the morning, and still some rain. Sunday, we woke up to 37 degrees.
The Illinois Amateur Shooting Dog Classic started after lunch on Friday. We drew 22 dogs, giving the judges plenty to look at. Every brace had some kind of bird work. Thanks to our well-seasoned bird planter, Pat Sheehan.
First honors went to Erin's Southern Comfort, a pointer male owned by Sean Pat Derrig. Comfort had a big forward race and handled to three nice, spaced-out finds. Second went to Rolling Hills Ty, who also had a huge race but a bit wilder than Comfort. Ty had one back, a divided, and two other finds. Third went to Alliwood's Shady Street, braced against Ty, and was putting down a nice race. He finished with one find, one divided, and two backs.
I want to thank Purina, AFTCA, SportDOG, and UKC for the support and donations to putting on this trial.
I must thank Mark Johnson for helping put on the trial and getting Purina and AFTCA support. Also, Aaron McAfee for coordinating with the site superintendent and helping put on a great trial.
We had all the handlers willing to step up and make this a great trial. Mike and Suanne Duvall and Aaron McAfee made sure we were fed. Aaron's Saturday night fish fry was wonderful.
