The Round Pond Amateur Shooting Dog Classic was held in its usual time frame, the third weekend in January.
The judicial saddles were ridden by two well-known and very successful people in the bird dog world, Sergio Velez and Phil Bowden. This great duo judiciously watched all the contenders during the whole trial. Their time and effort in coming out to judge were greatly appreciated. Round Pond was in wonderful condition. There were plenty of Bobwhite quail throughout the entire plantation. Tracy Swearingen and Neil Walker did a great job getting the grounds ready for this trial. Many thanks go out to Tracy Swearingen and Stephens Walker for marshaling every brace and to Clayton Cook for driving the bird buggy and keeping the cooler stocked with fresh beverages. I would also like to thank Purina and Greg Blair for all that they do for our sport. Christy Swearingen and Debbie Hofer helped prepare all the meals. We would also like to thank David McMahon for coming out and putting on a great performance Saturday night. We would also like to thank the Walkers for allowing us to keep this trial going on their beautiful grounds. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't be able to put on this wonderful trial.
Awakened, owned and handled by Brent Cox, was declared the winner with two outstanding finds. He had a find at 8 and 32. His performance kept you high in the saddle as he impressed everyone with each step he took. The judges didn't want to take their eyes off him. Each step displayed strength, high style, and lots of class. He hunted diligently and pointed at birds with perfect manners. He also had a strong forward face and always stayed in front of the gallery. At the end of his performance, the bar had been set, and a true winner was on top.
Erin's Grey Ghost, owned and handled by William Owen, was declared second with five finds--at 31, 38, 41, 46, and 48. He stood with great class and manners. He had a solid drive hunting with each step he took. He was all class with an overall nice performance throughout the hour. He had impeccable manners and stood beautifully. He also had a strong forward race and finished in the front.
Miller's Concealed Weapon, owned and handled by Bill Owen, was declared third with two finds at 6 and 32. He gave an outstanding performance on the ground. He displayed excellent manners. He had a strong forward race with amazing bird work.
Thank you to everyone who came out and supported this trial. Thank you to all the handlers and scouts who came out to participate. We couldn't do this without you all.
