Region 14 ASD ChampionshipF2025

Region 14 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship (front row): Brad McCardle with LBF Look Out Stagger Lee. (Back row): Sergio Velez (judge), Sig Guggenmoos, Ashley and Aiden Tracy, Rod Lecher, Darrell Curtis, John Holt, and Ryan Jones (judge) with Emma and Georgia.

When running a field trial in September in Alberta, anything is possible as far as weather goes. It could be hot. It could be freezing cold. It could rain; you might get thunderstorms, hail, or snow. We got lucky, at least as far as the trialers themselves were concerned; it was hot with no precipitation.

Running a successful trial is a team effort. First, we would like to thank our landowners: Glen Randle, who provides our camp area; the Conrad Scoville, Mark Crowle, and Todd Nelson families. Thanks go to our judges Ryan Jones, Sergio Velez, Lou Qualtiere, Brad McCardle, Dean Orosz, Ashley Tracy and I, who judged the club stakes. Darrell Curtis marshaled the trial. Milena Jones and her parents, Gino and Nadia, once again provided us with a meal to accompany the championship drawing on Friday evening, as well as the roast pig dinner for the Saturday banquet. Thank you to Ryan Jones for hauling and setting up the tent and tables for our community meals.

Thanks to Darrell Curtis for providing the dog truck, accommodating both dogs and horses, and to our dog truck driver, Gar Beacom.

Region 14 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship

It was a small entry for the Championship. There was one stellar performance, but most of the competitors fell victim to the heat. It was a luck-of-the-draw type of event. If you happened to be drawn in the first two braces of the day, you had a very good shot. Due to very dry conditions and 30 C temperatures after the first two hours, the degree of grit and conditioning required for a noteworthy performance wasn't met. The races of those who gutted out the full hour were inconsistent, and consequently, only the first two braces will be detailed.
Judges for the Region 14 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship were Sergio Velez and Ryan Jones. We thank them for their time and attention to the performances.

The Winners
Winning the Region 14 Amateur Shooting Dog Championship was two-year-old pointer male LBF Look Out Stagger Lee, owned and handled by Brad McCardle. Stagger Lee delivered a forward race with one excellent find on Huns. No runner-up was named.

The Running
LBF Look Out Stagger Lee (McCardle) and Caladen's Struttin Bode (Holt) were cast off east of the yard site with the temperature at 9 C, with the wind out of the southwest barely detectable. Bode was straight ahead, making the gate into the old Anhorn pasture. Stagger Lee had taken a big swing to the east but was back with us shortly after the first gate. Heading into the Crowle pasture, both dogs showed nicely heading south. At first, Stagger Lee was the bigger of the two, but with time, Bode was running bigger and bigger. Swinging east presented more bluffs, making it more difficult to keep track of the dogs. As we swung north, it was far more open, but Bode didn't show. At about 45, Holt asked for the tracker. Shortly after, at 47, Stagger Lee was on point. McCardle flushed a large covey of Huns with all in order.

Bohemian Rhapsody (McCardle) - Bridgers Insane Bolt (Holt). These two started west from the old gas plant road. At 5, Rhapsody pointed briefly, moved off, returned, birds lifted, and he failed a potential stop to flush. Bolt ran a consistent shooting dog race heading west and then north into the west pasture. As time went on, the effects of warming temperatures began to show. Bolt suffered an unproductive at 47. At 56, he pointed but then moved up and bumped the birds.

As stated, the rest of the performances went birdless and were inconsistent.
