The Coalfield Bird Dog Club hosted the first Ohio Valley Field Trial Circuit event of the 2020-2021 season the weekend of October 15-17. Numbers were good for the first Ohio Valley event of the season boasting three stakes with sixteen all-age dogs, ten Derbies and eight shooting dogs.

Joe and Tessa Hughes, avid amateur competitors from Remplap, Ala., served as the judges for the Amateur All-Age and Amateur Derby. Jon Lam, a regular Ohio Valley competitor and Rend Lake Club president from Makanda, Ill., served as the Amateur Shooting Dog judge with last minute replacement Mike Crouse, no stranger to the sport himself. Advertised judge Sarah Clary could not attend due to a family matter.

THE WINNERS

The Amateur All-Age Stake concluded Saturday. The winners were produced during the day's running Friday. Crouse's White Dragon, handled by Mary Sue Schalk, ran the first brace after lunch Friday. The white and liver pointer male had a strong, forward race, one find and finished going away, for earning the team the blue. Jay Lewis and Bocomo Dutchman competed in the 6th brace of the day. Also a liver and white pointer male, the first year all-age dog was sharp on the ground and had a find with a classy ground race to earn second place. In the second brace of the morning, Roger Watson ran R W Maybelle. The white pointer female hunted earnestly for Watson during the warm morning, earning the third place spot.

The Amateur Derby started immediately following the All-Age Stake Saturday morning. Perry Lacy handled his pointer male, Lacy's Cool Hand Luke, to first place. The young dog had a strong ground race and finished going away under the infamous power lines at the end of the morning course. David Hendricks and Pleasant Run Sally earned the second place spot. The white pointer female cracked her tail like a whip and kept to the front for Hendricks, a daughter of Champion Valiant showing potential early in the season.

Wrapping up the Derby placements was Crouse's Ka Boom, a pointer male. Mary Sue Schalk was again in the handler's saddle for Team Crouse with this youngster. Her pup was happy to be out and showed to the front when he found his wheels.

The trial concluded on Sunday with the Shooting Dog Stake. Three pointer females earned the placements in the stake. Joe and Tessa Hughes took second and third with J Maple Jester and J Maple Lucy, respectively. Both dogs hunted earnestly and were bidable for handler Joe Hughes during the hour. Earning first was Crouse's Icee Beauty for handler Mary Sue Schalk. A classy performance from a stylish little athlete to wrap up a solid weekend of horseback field trials.

Many, many thanks to our judges, dog wagon drivers, Vincent Major, Jay Lewis and Alan Benson. As well as a big thank you to the West Kentucky Wildlife Management Area team.

We are very fortunate in Western Kentucky to be able to utilize public grounds for horseback field trials and we appreciate the work that the WMA employees do to keep the grounds ready. Thank you to all participants and best of luck this season!
