Summerhill ASDS25

Amateur Shooting Dog: Joe Lordi with Fluid Drive, Mark Janiec with Southpoint's Hog Wild, and Bob Verderosa with Waybetter Bobby. (Standing): Danielle Lordi, an unidentified participant, Raina Palazzolo, Blake Palazzolo, Bill Bruchey, Lou Palazzolo, Ben Dillard, Karen Janiec, Sheila Cassidy, Joyce Taylor, Larry King, Wendy Tracy, and George Tracy.

The Summerhill Club ran its spring trial at the George Tracy training grounds near Glenville, Pennsylvania, on May 3 and 4. Karen Saniga does all of the work involved in planning and organizing the trial. She also has coffee and sweets available for breakfast, and sandwiches and soup for lunch as well. Mary Tracy and Casey Tracy put together a dinner on Saturday at Mike Tracy's home across the way.

A public drawing was held on Friday evening on the grounds, following a cocktail party and pizza dinner. The SBHA supported the trial and also provided bags of Eukanuba dog food to all winning handlers. Darren Boyer brought the birds and also made a chicken corn soup, a local delicacy, to add to the lunch menu. Eric Munden of Lion Country Supply donated collars to the first-place winners. SBHA and the Youth Alliance provided prizes for the youth participants.
George Tracy, Mike Tracy, Jeanette Tracy, and Dillon Shaffer were busy saddling horses, planting birds, carrying water, and doing all of the other things necessary to run a good trial.
Large galleries were evident throughout the running.

Our judges were Ben Dillard and Lou Palazzolo, both from Maryland. Lou was a last-minute substitute for Hailey Moreland, who was called home to be with her ailing father, Bubba Moreland, who passed away. There were many sad faces here. The Derby judges were Larry King from Maryland and Mark Janiec from New Jersey. Their decisions were popular.

Winning the Amateur Shooting Dog stake was Waybetter Bobby, a pointer male owned and handled by Bob Verderosa. Bob was here earlier to work his dogs with George Tracy's help, and the help helped as Bobby ran a smooth, forward race and had five perfectly handled finds.
Southpoint's Hog Wild, owned and handled by Mark Janiec, was second. The classy pointer had three finds and a back handled with finished manners to go with a good effort on the ground.
Joe Lordi placed third with his pointer, Fluid Drive, who would be retired after this competition. Drive had a good race and three nicely handled finds.

Alex Smith won the Amateur Derby with pointer Southbound Hotdog Homer. Homer had a good race, always to the front, and stylishly scored three divided finds, a back and three finds on his own.
Second was Bully Budd, a coming derby pointer, which also had a classy race, three nice finds, and a nonproductive.
Roger Boser's Red setter Slingblade was third. He had a good race to the front with three finished finds.

We had a very small but mighty Youth stake with three entries but four handlers. Joe Lordi and Alex smith judged. Liam handled Waybetter Rebel to a fine race and five good finds, all finished with Liam knowing exactly what to do as a handler. First-time contestant Charlie got on a horse before the running to test his nerve on one of Tracy's big horses. He didn't like it. But he watched his friend Liam and then said, "I'll ride," and ride he did, handling Steel Valley Raven like a pro, and the dog showed running and on game nicely.

We had two handlers, albeit very young, handling pointer Jolene Jolene. They were Amelia and Brooklyn, both riding with assistance. Jolene Jolene didn't mind, performing admirably on the ground and on her multiple finds as the young pair snuck through the cover, flushing quail and shooting their cap guns. We counted 29 riders and four side-by-sides filled with people during the running.
Thanks to everyone for supporting the trial.
