Garden State Amateur Shooting Dog Classic: Alex Smith and Brayden Smith with Calico's Over the Top, Joe Amatulli (judge), Chris Catanzarite and Mark Janiec with Backcountry Pure Gold, Allen Welch (judge), and Tiffani Smith with Calico's Country Strong.

The Garden State Amateur Shooting Dog Classic was held at Greenwood Wildlife Management Area on March 28-29. The grounds were a bit of a challenge, as the state had done some burning prior to the trial. The club decided to run one course so all the dogs would have an equal chance running on the same course.

The club would like to thank the following people for their help: Matt and Norman Basilone for laying out the course, feeding and planting birds, and bringing dogs to break away; Joe Cincotta for ordering trophies, providing snacks for the morning break and everything else he does to make the trials in New Jersey a success; and our judges, Joe Amatulli and Allen Welch, for riding hard and giving every dog their undivided attention. Their decisions were well received.

The club would like to thank Eukanuba and the Southern Bird Hunters Association for all their support. They are working hard to promote field trials, and we certainly appreciate all their efforts.

The Winners
Calico's Over the Top was named the winner. He was expertly handled by Alex Smith and scouted by Tiffani Smith. "Blaze" was in an exciting brace with Great River Yellowstone for 35 minutes, with each of them trading off stylish finds. As we came across the breakaway, both dogs were watered and sent on. Yellowstone did not want to move, but was under the whistle and then a bird. This was just one of those unfortunate situations. Blaze scored one more find and finished to the front for the win.

Second was Backcountry Pure Gold, handled by Chris Catanzarite. Pure Gold earned three well-mannered finds and a strong race in the heat, finishing the hour strong and going away.
Calico's Country Strong was handled by Alex Smith with four stylish finds and a strong race, also running the afternoon heat. Her strong effort continued her winning ways, earning a third-place finish for team Calico.
