Open All-Age (front, l-r): Frank LaNasa with Warbird, Scott Jordan with Stone Church Nation, and Jim Tande with Due Respect. (Rear, l-r): Sue Tande, Dean Renneke, Katherine Gove, and Jean LaNasa.

The Northwest Field Association has run a spring trial since its inception in 1954, and I am happy to report that we kept up the tradition by successfully running one more. Although not a huge entry, there were enough participants with very competitive dogs to make it a fun, relaxed weekend. It is always great to see some of the old guard, but even better to see some new young faces in the mix. We missed our fearless leader and trial chairman, Ian MacTavish. Ian has been the backbone of the club, and we are so grateful for all his hard work and hope he can continue making progress in his recovery.

The weather ranged from blustery and cold to sunny and warm, which challenged some of the afternoon dogs trying to run the prairies in the heat. The birds were excellent this year, which is always a plus. The bourbon was flowing rather freely for the traditional viewing of the Kentucky Derby.

Frank LaNasa masterfully handled his young male, Warbird, to win the Open All-Age. "Joe" had two finds and a ground covering forward race, found pointed after time to the front. Second place, Stone Church Nation, owned by Dean Renneke, was handled by Scott Jordan. "Rooster" had an impressive limb find with a more impressive relocation, finishing strong to the front. Third place went to Due Respect, handled by Jim Tande. The Setter tallied two well-handled finds, an unproductive and a strong race.

In the Open Derby, Scott Jordan returned to the winner's circle, placing two puppies in first and third place. His young male, "Joe," took first with a big forward enthusiast race. Scott's other dog, "Trip," took third, pointing two quail, assisting with the flush, and enjoyed a good race with less maturity than Joe. Jim Tande took second with Total Confidence, who floated around the edges of the prairie, scoring a divided find.

The Open Walking Shooting Dog was won by Big Big Energy, handled by Jordan Pharris, with a forward-pleasing race and more than respectable bird work. Second place honors went to Blind Faith, handled by Ben Fleischacker, rewarded for her easy handling, good race, and flawless birdwork.
Nik Zewers handled Southern Breeze to first place in the Open Walking Derby with a powerful race. Clover Valley's Evans, handled by Jordan Pharris, took second with a find and decent race that showed signs of the heat near the end.

First place in the Open Shooting Dog was Heart Like A Truck, handled by Dave Moore. This female could easily have won on just her consistent front-running race. From start to finish, she reached out to all the forward edges with a strong ground-covering stride. As an extra bonus, she was rewarded with a nice find remaining staunch long after the shot. Once again, Scott Jordan was rewarded with two placements in a stake, this time second and third in the Open Shooting Dog. Second-place dog Rip Nation was braced with his littermate, the first-place dog. They could have been a matched set, both strong and forward hunting. The heat made birds a scarce commodity, but Rip stood tall and proud at 27 on a well-handled quail. Dean Renneke's Rooster took third place, handled by Scott Jordan. Rooster is a consistent big running dog that is always a pleasure to watch. Although he made several big moves, handled nicely, scored on a quail at 28, running in the heat without a bracemate took enough of a toll to drop him to third.

Trials cannot happen without a lot of hard work and dedication. Once again, thanks to Ian MacTavish, Frank LaNasa, all our judges, Mark Pfiefer for delivering water, Ben Fleischacker and Nik Zewers for helping with the dog wagon, and Bruce Mueller for all his assistance picking up, caring for birds, and tirelessly planting birds. Thanks also to our loyal sponsor, Purina.
