We held our spring trial on March 8, 2025, at Ellis Farm, Orchardville, Illinois. The Club had a very good draw, and the weather cooperated. The Club thanks Ted Ellis and Linda Ellis for allowing us to run our trial on this great venue. Lunch was prepared and served by Jae Crunk.
As I left the grounds at the end of the day, I reflected on the day of running dogs and all those who brought and entered dogs. There are so many wonderful men and women who trial dogs, and I am so fortunate to be associated with this great sport. All of us want to win and work hard to achieve winning, but the sportsmanship and willingness to help each other during the trial speak volumes. I am blessed to be in this sport and be around many great men and women.
The Club would like to thank all those who judged the various stakes. The Butch Spelbring Shooting Dog, Amateur Derby, and Amateur Gun Dog were judged by Brad Hargis and Dan Crunk. The Amateur Puppy stake was judged by Rick Stanford and Steve Feuss. The biggest stake of the day was the Shooting Dog, with 16 dogs drawn. All four stakes were very competitive.
Butch Spelbring Amateur Shooting Dog
Ken DeLong's Brittany male, "Shooter," was named the winner in this stake. Shooter had a big race to the front and was always hunting the right objectives. Shooter is fast on the ground and had two finds in his half hour. Craig Hiatt's pointer female, "Roxie," took home second place with three finds and a good race to the front.
"Hawk," a setter male for Rob Warner, took home the third-place plaque. Hawk had the only covey find for the weekend and handled the covey perfectly. Hawk had another find for Rob and a good race. On a sidenote, it was good to have Craig Hiatt at a trial. Craig has had some health issues, and we are praying for continued recovery.
Amateur Derby
Don Heisner's setter female, "Abby," took home the first-place plaque. What makes her special for Don is that her sire is "Buck," who has done his fair share of winning for Don. Abby had two finds and a race to the front. William Creason from Missouri took home second and third in the Derby stake. "Ridge," a German Shorthair male, was second with one find and a nice race. Mr. Creason's derby, "Mack," a German Shorthair male, took home the third-place plaque.
Amateur Gun Dog
The Amateur Gun Dog was won by "Pixie," a setter female for Charles Mason from Kansas. Pixie had five finds for her half-hour and was very attractive on the ground. Chris Gandolfo, a relatively new handler, took home second in this stake with "Noodle," a pointer male. Noodle had five finds in his half hour of work. Myah Landolina, our youth handler, took home third with her German Shorthair male. "Diamond" had four finds for Myah and one requiring a relocation. Myah is always a force in the Gun Dog with Diamond.
Amateur Puppy
The Puppy stake had six nice entries for the judges to watch. "Preacher," a pointer male for Briam Stockrahm, was first. Brian has placed Preacher many times this season. Decklin Wheat placed his pointer, "Scout," with a very nice race. Scout is so attractive on the ground. Decklin is our other youth handler. His grandfather, Frank Christi, reports that Decklin does all the training. Third place went to "Jack," a pointer male handled by Dan Crunk.
The NBHA clubs are thankful for our sponsors, Purina Pro Plan, Garmin, onX, Mule Hunting Clothing, and Gun Dog Central. These sponsors enrich the NBHA trials. A big thanks goes to each of our sponsors.
