Amateur All-Age Classic: I Dream of Jeannie posed by Worth Lewis, Rocky River Loaded posed by Grayson Francis, Swampfox Just Bruce posed by Al Dahl, Kyle Whitfield, Steve Mills, Jim and Mary Ann Womack (judges), and Til Hankley.
We were fortunate to again use the beautiful Greenfields Farm for our spring gala, The Virginia Classics. We owe this privilege to our hosts, John and Vivian Milton. Springtime in Mr. Jefferson's country, known as Central Virginia's Albemarle County, is always breathtakingly beautiful and was nonetheless so during all but the last day of this trial. The Club thanks Mr. John and Miss Vivian for their generosity. Greenfields feels like home.
Purina was, as always, our sponsor. We also thank Greg Blair. It was an honor to hoist the Purina banner.
Julie Richards was a workhorse as she always is. Our full tummies say thanks, and our waistline curses.
Darryl Miller planted birds in his masterful manner. Mike Winchester and Kirk Regensburg ran the dog wagon. Steve Mills did the thousand things he always does, each perfect. Al Dahl judged, answered thousands of vet questions, and set the tone for always being a gentleman. Al and Grayson judged the Shooting Dog Classic, Til Hankley brought our All-Age Classic judges, Jim and Mary Ann Womack, and he and Kirk Regensburg judged the 30-minute Shooting Dog. Steve Mills and I judged the Derby. It was a happy and well-oiled group.
Pagan Creek Atticus won the 30-minute Shooting Dog for Virginia Field Trial President Gene Hogge. He had three finds and stretched on out there. Second was Bad News Bob for Bruce Conover, which had two birds and a good race. Third went to Murphy's Law, handled by Jim Womack.
The second stake was the Amateur Derby. Al Dahl brought two unrelated kennelmates who made the decision an easy one. Buffalo Junction Grady fairly flew around the course and pointed a bird at 29 to seal first place.
Kennelmate Buffalo Junction Geri also had a find and was just shy of Grady's race to take second. In third was "Moe," who had birdwork and ran well.
The All-Age Classic ran on Friday. The winner was I Dream of Jeannie for Kyle Whitfield. Jeannie ran a spirited race. Her birds were pointed at 5, 10, 19, 29, 35, and 55. A UP at 45 was carded, but not a problem. She is a fancy dog.
Second was Rocky River Loaded for Grayson Francis. "Gus" had six finds, one unproductive, and a strong finish.
Swampfox Just Bruce was new to Greenfields, and his primary objective was to see all of it; he did. His scout, Al Dahl, was a busy man. Bruce looked beautiful on all four of his finds, and one unproductive.
The Shooting Dog Classic was won by veteran Calico's Over The Top and Alex Smith. She had an unproductive at 10 and then scored successfully at 25, 35, 39, and 47. Her ground game was excellent, and her handle was exceptional. It was a very good performance.
Second was a beautifully bright liver-marked big ole he-man classical looking dog, Bud Adams, owned by popular walking horse trainer Chad Adams and run by Tom Brigman. He was pretty to watch run and point. He had birds at 19, 24, 35, and 52. He put in a good hour.
In third was "Spike" for Worth Lewis. This busy setter backed at 5 and 45, had an unproductive at 18, and had finds at 25, 30, and 39.
Grayson and Al decided to run the whole Shooting Dog Classic on Saturday. The weather was coming in, and it was a good but tiring decision. Their efforts and the good spirits of the competitors were appreciated.
We adjourned this trial, looking forward to the Region 3 Championship, which would start the next day.
Greenfields Field Trial Club thanks everyone who participates in any way and makes our trials the best they can be.
Y'all come back!
