The Kansas Red Setter Clubs 2025 Open Derby and Open Puppy Classic's trial began on March 21, 2025 on the beautiful Radcliff Ranch at Dexter, Kansas. I want to thank Paula Radcliff for allowing us the use of her ranch again this year. The Wichita Bird Dog Club members Frank Schoenborn, Bob Lais, Greg Gibson, Chuck Maxson and Sonny Clark helped again this year, thanks for all your help. Also, I need to thank Nutri-Source for their continued support.
Our judges this year were Scott Henning, Scott Hadley, Eddie Berendzen, Nathan Berendzen, Frank Schoenborn and Chuck Maxson. I thank them all for their many hours in the saddle and their well accepted decisions. The noon lunches and Saturday night Banquet were prepared again this year by Linda Beauchamp, and Frank Schoenborn who cooked the Saturday night meats.
The first event was the Open All-Age which began on Friday the 21 and was judged by Scott Henning of Bentley, Kansas and Scott Hadley of Sayre, Oklahoma. Because other clubs in the area were also scheduled for the same weekend we only drew 5 dogs for the All-Age. Bocomo Dutchman, a pointer male owned by Jay Lewis of Ashland, Missouri won this event. "Duke" had two nice finds and a big forward race. Tracy Haines "Tic" had a find at 30 minutes and a nice race but couldn't be awarded a placement because only 3 dogs participated.
The Open Derby Classic ran next and was judged by Scott Henning and Frank Schoenborn. First place was earned by High Line Drive, a pointer male owned by Matt Griffin of Shawnee, Oklahoma and handled by Scott Hadley of Sayre, Oklahoma. "Kaine" had a find at 15 minutes and a good forward race. HP Top Gun, a pointer male, owned and handled by Rodney Shoemaker of Grain Valley, Missouri won second place. "Maverick" had a good forward race but no birds. Third place was Griffs Hackberry's Zack a pointer male owned by Brian Kennedy of Shelby, Iowa and handled by Justin Crook. "Zack" had two finds, one at 12 minutes and the second on a wild covey at 30 minutes.
The Open Shooting Dog drew nineteen dogs and began running midmorning on Saturday, March 22. Judges were Eddie Berendzen and Nathan Berendzen of Higbee, Missouri. Chisholm Creek Sweetie Pie, a German Shorthair female owned and handled by Mark Wasserman of Valley Center, Kansas nailed down first place. "Pie" had two finds and a nice forward race. Second place was won by Two Seamer a pointer male owned by Colby Tackett of Cherokee, Oklahoma and handled by Justin Crook. Two Seamer had two finds and a good race. Laura Miller of Manhattan, Kansas took third place with Millstar's Lion Rampant a Vizsla male. "Sawney" had a smooth race with one find.
The Open Puppy Classic ran last on a windy Sunday Afternoon. No dogs had bird work and were placed on their race and handling. Judging this event was Chuck Maxson of Clearwater, Kansas and Frank Schoenborn of Wichita, Kansas. First place was won by High Value Target a pointer male owned by Ron Steams of Sayre, Oklahoma and handled by Scott Hadley. "Krew" had the best forward race. Second place went to High Expectations. "Saige" a pointer female is owned and was handled by Scott Hadley of Sayre, Oklahoma. Third place was won by Fortius Thrill the Nation. "T" a Vizsla male was owned and handled by Sean Anderson of Alvord, Texas.
Our pictures were limited because many of the owners and handlers had other Trials to attend. As we all know March is a very busy time for Field Trials.
I want to thank all the participants for their entries which made our trial fun and successful. The wild bird population was increasing this year, and the weather cooperated. We brought in fifteen handlers from six states. Sean Anderson of Alvord, Texas was the long-distance winner. Hope to see you all again at our next Trial.
