Region 6 Amateur Walking Shooting Dog Championship (l-r): Taylor Henley (judge), Courtney Henley, Grayson Fox, Mike Fox with Foxy Lady Sadie, Terry Boatright, J. D. Waters, Aaron McAfee with My Way Coal Train, Buddy Morrison, and Cliff Monroe.

It was a great way to work off Thanksgiving, and everyone had a good time! A great bunch of amateur handlers and fun-loving dog lovers came to see 22 shooting dogs put on a show! Plenty of birds, good weather, great grounds, and knowledgeable judges make for an awesome championship.

First, I'd like to thank Taylor and Buddy, our esteemed judges. They did a great job and were very helpful and attentive. Their knowledge of bird dogs was evident by how they handled the trial! Good judges make for a great trial.

I would especially like to thank Donna Boatright for her help with everything at the clubhouse. Her homemade lasagna was the best I had ever eaten. That was the opinion of everybody there on Saturday. So, if you missed lunch, you missed a real treat! One camper even took three days' worth to his camper for the next three days! Also, I would like to thank her husband, Terry, for coming, riding, and helping. For you all who don't know, they just put on the very successful Kentucky Open Shooting Dog at Berea. Their help was most welcome.
We appreciate Sportsman's Pride for their support. Thanks for the 800 lbs. of dog food. With the help of Cliff Monroe and Garmin, the winner and runner-up received a Garmin TT-25 collar; the collars were well received. Not only did Taylor judge, he brought the birds, much appreciated. Courtney came and drove the dog wagon, which was good for her and us! Everyone that came helped out, and it made for a great trial.

Every dog entered was good enough to win and showed that in their brace. Unfortunately, a lot of them were over-exuberant! Twenty-two dogs came to the line; all deserved the judges' attention. An athletic pleasing group of competitors. A fun trial to watch!

The champion and runner-up ran together in the fourth brace. It was very exciting with Mike Fox's Foxy Lady Sadie putting down a strong race always to the front. She had four finds, an unproductive, and a nice back. She stood out and made it rough on all the other contestants. My Way Coal Train, also in the fourth brace, found two quail and had a couple of backs to gain runner-up for the dynamic duo of owner J. D. Waters and handler Aaron McAfee. Congratulations to these two dogs and their owners and handlers. They bested a really good field!

Several dogs pushed pretty hard, especially Redbud's Southern Boy, a Pointer male in the first brace for owner Aaron McAfee. He had four finds and stood through a tough situation when his bracemate didn't back. He ran a huge race, unfortunately lost at time. The ninth brace had a couple of nice dogs for Isenberg and McAfee that were doing good until they wrecked on birds. In the last brace, Bluegrass Unbridled had a nice go with four finds but too much movement on birds at flush. Again, thanks everyone for coming and helping!
