The Chickahominy Field Trial Association returned to Hunt's again this spring for our third trial on these grounds. Hunt's Game Preserve is a well-maintained set of hunting grounds that lends itself to walking and horseback field trials. Its owner and manager, Mr. Clint Holloway, is an accommodating and extremely helpful host. This past spring, the clubhouse and its kitchen were lost to a fire, and Mr. Holloway modified a nearby building, adding additional bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Thank you, Mr. Holloway, for all you have done!

Our field trial chairperson, Sharon Townley, made sure the arrangements for all the necessary things for a first-class trial were in place. Sharon and Phil Rutter judged the Derby stake on Saturday and the Puppy and Derby stakes on Sunday. Grace Ann Lawson and Terry McCormick judged the Shooting Dog stake on Saturday, and Jim Jones and Art Cohen judged the Shooting Dog stake on Sunday. On both days, Danny Gooch planted the birds for every brace. As usual, Phil Townley was busy the whole trial, not only tending their string of dogs and horses but also driving the tractor, pulling the gallery wagon on Saturday, and driving the dog truck on Sunday. Our galley wagon was supplied by Pat Brooks and was pulled by the John Deere furnished by Clint Holloway. We thank them both for this! Judy and Rita Jones served lunches centered around chicken casserole on Saturday and meatloaf on Sunday, which all enjoyed.

The U. S. Complete Amateur Derby was the first stake to run on Saturday morning. Named first was Jimmy Crandall's Pointer, Ben, with three broke finds and an unproductive, followed by Steve Moore's Setter, Jade, as second with three finds, which allowed the handler to flush before the chase. Both dogs had moderate derby races.

The Derby was followed by the Dave Pomfret Memorial Shooting Dog Stake, which was judged by Grace Ann Lawson and Terry McCormick.

The Dave Pomfret Memorial Shooting Dog Stake winner was "Big," an appropriately named Pointer male handled by Ashby Morgan. Big ran in the sixth brace, handling the warm and dry conditions well with a powerful, forward race. He carded five well-placed finds with great style. Second place was awarded to "Mavis," a Pointer female handled by Jameson Crandall in the last brace. Mavis demonstrated a pleasing forward pattern, carding two stylish finds and one unproductive. Third place went to "Jake," a Pointer male handled by Jimmy Crandall. Jake ran in the first brace of the stake, showing a snappy running style and carding one very stylish find"

We began the Virginia Association of Field Trial Clubs horseback trial on Sunday morning.
In the Amateur Puppy stake, first was "Ryder," a male Pointer handled by Worth Lewis, with Terry McCormick's German Shorthair Pointer male finishing second. These two youngsters put down a nice puppy race that was fun to watch.

The Amateur Derby was won by a Pointer male named "Smudge." Smudge was handled by Jeff Smith and had a powerful forward race with two derby finds. Second was George Doyle's female Setter, Patty. Her race was not as quite as big as the first-place dog as she hunted her way around the course. Birds were hard to find with scenting conditions limited by the dry conditions. Third place was Jeff Smith's other Pointer named Stella, a female with seven game contacts, two of which were pheasants, three of which she pointed, and one of which Jeff could flush. She started slow but finished stronger.

The Amateur Shooting Dog stake was run in warm and dry conditions, and scenting conditions were not the best. However, the winning dogs managed some good finds and managed the warm conditions well. All finished strong and well to the front. "Samantha," a white Pointer female, took first with three finds and an aggressive forward race for owner Larry King. She was stylish both on the ground and on game. "Jack," a black and white Setter male, took second with two finds and a strong forward race for handler Lee Flanders. Lee also handled "Molly," a Pointer female, to third place with two finds and a good forward race. All three dogs showed the style and class you would expect from a winning field trial performance.
Your reporter thanks Judge Grace Ann Lawson and Judge Jim Jones for the descriptions of the performances of the winners of the Walking and Horseback Shooting Dog stakes.
We will return to Hunt's Game Preserve in the spring and hope you and your dogs will join us!
