Northwest Chukar OSDF24

Northwest Chukar Open Shooting Dog Championship (Front, l-r): Bridget Ledington (scout), Bill Owen with Champion Mauck's Wyeast Owyhee Ajax, Matt Blockovich (scout) with Runner-up Champion O T F's K's Good Time, Brian Gingrich (handler), Ed Mayhew, and Sergio Velez. (Back, l-r): Jim Ledington (judge), Alex Mauck (owner/handler), Kris Wall, Jason Staley (judge), Anne Tyson, Jenne Burgi, and Rich Burgi.

For many years, these trials have been held at Prairie Wind Ranch, but disaster struck in August. The Paddock Fire, started by lightning on August 18, devastated the sagebrush hills and rocky outcroppings and burned nearly 190,000 acres, including most of the ranch. As a result of the fire and the later date, many thought the Northwest Chukar trials would have to be canceled this year, but with great effort from many people, the stakes were moved to the legendary Mile Post 9 grounds south of Marsing, Idaho, and were thoroughly enjoyed by all attendees.

Boise Valley Pointing Dog Club would like to thank Jim and Martha Ledington, Bridget Ledington, Phil and Sharon Bowden, the German Pointer Club of Idaho, Kevin McRae, Alex Mauck and Christina Wall, Cliff Mesnard, Mel Lueck, Bill Owen, and all the others that helped making these trials successful. Without the efforts of all these people, the Chukar trials would not have been possible. Also, the Club would like to thank the attendees and professionals who come each year. The Boise Valley Pointing Dog Club would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to Purina, SportDOG, Garmin, The Saddle Guy, and UltraCruz for the sponsorship of these trials.

The trials started with the Larry Brech Memorial Classic Derby. Painted Owyhee Ky, owned and handled by Jim Ledington, was first; Dezasterous Silver Bandit, owned by Robby Thompson and handled by Brian Gingrich, was second; and Circle B Americus RJ, owned by Phil Bowden and handled by Sergio Valez, was third.

The Shooting Dog Championship was next, judged by Jim Ledington and Jason Staley. Mauck's Wyeast Owyhee Ajay was champion on a solid race and a find in the middle of the hour of brace 7. O T F's Good Time was named runner-up, owned by Mat Blockovich and handled by Brian Gingrich. Good Time ran in the second brace and had a stop to flush and a find near the end of the hour.

The weather caused a delay in the All-Age Championship for half a day, but the stake was eventually swept by Canadian professional Sergio Velez. The champion was BK Unforgiven, owned by Sam Handous, and the runner-up was BK Bulletproof owned by Phil Bowden, Rod Lecher, and Sergio Velez. In the third brace, Unforgiven had a very nice race and a very striking covey find near the end of the hour, which set the bar for the rest of the stake. Bulletproof had a forward all-age race after a find in the first quarter hour in the 10th brace. The All-Age judges were Rich Burgi and Ed Mayhew.

The National Amateur All-Age Championship was held on the weekend and was judged by Rich Burgi and Brian Gingrich. Mauck's Wyeast Owyhee Dallee was named champion, owned and handled by Alex Mauck, and Painted Owyhee Breeze was named runner-up, owned and handled by Bridget Ledington. Both had all-age races, and the judges ordered a call-back to complete the placements.
