NBHA National Amateur Championship Winners (l-r): Tim Penn, Bob Bakas (judge), Geoff Johnson, Adam DeLude, David Cates, Greg Blair, Klaus Schmidt, David Emert with Emert's Sho Me Motu, John Vanada, Holly Hatfield, Sonny Clark, Keith Wright (host), Jack Glover, Warren Parrott with Hirollins Gone And Doneit, C. J. Campbell, an unidentified participant, J. C. Monroe, Shane Alison, John Hott (judge), and John Wright.

The 2023 NBHA National Amateur Shooting Dog Championship was run November 10-12 at Keith Wright's Redwood Farm, near Covington, Indiana. The Redwood Farm is the perfect place to show a walking-shooting dog, with rolling hills, edges, feed strips, and plenty of cover that gives the opportunity for dogs to make moves while staying completely in tune with the handler. Most importantly, there was no shortage of birds again, as every brace had bird contact, with many having multiple covey finds.

The field was filled with tough competition, full of numerous champions and many who will have their day soon enough. The Wrights did it again, knocking their hospitality out of the park and being the best hosts! Thank you to each and every handler of the 38 dogs drawn who traveled from all over to make this a great championship.

We want to thank the judges who took time out of their busy schedules to come and watch this great field of dogs while giving their utmost attention to each dog over the weekend: Bob Bakas and John Hott, both from Illinois.

We'd also like to thank our sponsors for their continued support. Purina and Garmin provided dog food and collars for our champion and runner-up champion.

Champion Emert's Sho Me Motu ran a good walking shooting dog race, always in tune with his handler and always to the front. He displayed the style and intensity the judges were looking for in his finds. He had an NP at 4, a back at 14, and finds at 13, 17, 33, 40, 44, and 54.

Runner-up Champion Hirollins Gone And Done It also ran a good, attractive walking shooting dog race, always displaying fantastic style and intensity on his birds. He scored finds at 1, 7, 25, 35, and 37, had a back at 44, and an NP at 60. What separated him from the champion was a brief absence where the handler and scout went backward in search of the dog on the ridge by the pond.
